Respiratory Therapy at UPMC
As specialized experts in respiratory and pulmonary care, UPMC’s respiratory care team fills a unique and essential role in patient care at UPMC. From managing ventilators that aid critically ill patients to offering breathing treatments to patients with chronic illnesses like asthma, to consulting with nurses and physicians as an active member of the bedside care team, respiratory therapy supports a wide range of patient populations. Respiratory Care Intern
Students who are currently enrolled in a CoARC-approved respiratory program and have completed at least one semester can gain valuable clinical experience as interns under the leadership and guidance of licensed Respiratory Therapists, on the path to their own impactful careers.
Respiratory Care Assistant
Under the direction of the Respiratory team, Respiratory Care Assistants gain experience in the field and support patient care through equipment management and inventory, as well as performing introductory clinical tasks. (Requires a high school diploma/GED; enrollment in a post-secondary program preferred but not required)
Respiratory Therapist (CRT/RRT)
As leaders of the respiratory team, Certified Respiratory Therapists (CRTs) and Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRTs) consult on and deliver high-quality respiratory services to patients in need of cardiopulmonary support across all areas of the hospital.
