Education & Training

With a wide range of UPMC-sponsored programs, educational opportunities, and partnerships with colleges and universities, students can pursue the education they need to launch a rewarding new career at an affordable cost. From nursing to imaging, robotics to radiography, and everything in between, UPMC is committed to providing innovative education for future health care professionals.

Internships & Fellowships

Still in school or recently graduated and looking for health care experience along the way? UPMC’s internship and fellowship programs offer firsthand experience in your field, working alongside our team to make Life Changing Medicine happen and set you up for future career success.

College juniors and seniors spend this full-time, paid 11-week internship applying their studies and gaining practical experience through exposure to real-world business opportunities in their areas of interest, including supply chain, finance, IT, and HR.

Explore your finance and accounting interests as you gain broad exposure to UPMC’s operations, participate in networking and mentorship opportunities, and prepare for a leadership role on our team through this three-year, full-time, paid program designed for college seniors and recent graduates.

An accelerated learning program for young professionals pursuing an IT career, UPMC’s ITR Program offers hands-on experience across multiple divisions of UPMC with rewarding projects that directly affect operations and patient care. UPMC’s ITR is a two-year, full-time, paid program for recent college graduates.

Summer residents in this 500-hour, paid internship have a unique opportunity to learn and contribute to the UPMC Health Services Division, while pursuing health care career interests and receiving mentorship from executives and administrative fellows in the Administrative Fellowship Program.

This paid four-year apprenticeship program offers a pathway to the skilled trades through hands-on training, mentorship, and the opportunity to develop essential skills. Apprentices work full-time while receiving on-the-job training and participating in online learning towards a certificate program.

Pharmacy Assistants work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist to organize, stock, and distribute medications to patients (completion of high school diploma or equivalent required).

Respiratory Care Assistants support the respiratory therapy team through patient care activities and equipment management (high school diploma required and must currently be enrolled in Respiratory Therapy program).

Medical Lab Technicians process specimens for analysis, providing accountability for the accurate performance of laboratory testing (completion of high school diploma or equivalent required).

Central Sterile Processing Associates inspect, assemble, sterilize, and document reusable surgical instrumentation.

Imaging Services Tech Assistants work with Imaging Technologists, collaborating to educate and transport patients before and after their Imaging procedures (completion of high school diploma or equivalent required).

Patient Care Technicians utilize hands-on skills to ensure patients’ hygiene, comfort, and companionship, making this role a fulfilling journey with opportunities for personal growth and professional development (high school diploma or equivalent plus successful completion of UPMC’s patient care technician class required).

Nursing Programs

Entering the field of nursing might seem intimidating, but we aim to make it easier. With programs designed to develop and encourage young talent, UPMC sets new nurses up for success from day one of their careers.

UPMC Schools of Nursing can help you become a Registered Nurse in as little as 16 months, at a fraction of the cost of a traditional BSN program. With six locations across Pennsylvania and a variety of program lengths, you can find an option that’s the right fit for you.

This paid 10-week internship gives junior-level (or equivalent) nursing students the opportunity to explore different specialties, working full-time in a variety of clinical settings.

Gain hands-on experience as you rotate across a variety of different specialties and units to help you decide what specialty is the best fit for you.

Jump into your area of interest right away with full-time unit-based roles for graduate nurses.
